The Uniontown boys basketball team made it to the WPIAL Playoffs. Their team had a very gutsy win against Central Valley. Uniontown was up by five points heading into the half with a score of 31-36. The warriors of central valley had a 6’8 guard that dominated and had 16 heading into halftime. Uniontown had to find a way to stop him. Gio Marian of Uniontown had a rough night he picked up two very quick fouls which he was matching up on their 6’8 player.
Mello Grooms from Uniontown was next in line to guard their big man, and he was the perfect match up. Grooms defended him from buzzer to buzzer, making him work for every basket, while staying out of foul trouble. Central Valley was fighting back from a halftime deficit, and ended up hitting important three pointers to take a commanding 47-40 lead. Before you knew it, Uniontown began chipping at the lead. Within a few possessions, and some important shots, Uniontown tied up the game at 47 with only three and a half minutes to go.
As the two teams went back an forth for the next three minutes, the score was knotted at 57. As the Raiders pushed down the floor, Billy Deshields found Mello Grooms wide open for an easy layup down low. With 15.3 seconds to go, Uniontown led Central Valley 59-57. Central Valley struggled to get a good look so with 5.1 seconds left, they called a time out in hopes to draw up a game winning play. As they in-bounded the ball to their big man, he took one dribble and was stopped by the duo of Mello Grooms, Billy Deshields. The ball was loose and the found its way into the hands of Uniontown’s own Bubba Winfrey. As the buzzer sounded, Uniontown had secured a first round victory, and advanced on to playing Indiana in the second round on Saturday, February 24th at 2:30. The game will be at Gateway High School and a student bus will be transporting the fans down. Make sure you grab your tickets and come down to support your boy’s basketball team!
