UHS senior Emily Parker recently received a full scholarship to California University on March 2nd. Emily is 18 years old and would like to pursue a career in education. We took a minute to sit down with her and ask her about her experience with applying and the whole process.
How did you find out about the scholarship?Mrs. Baker told me about it because she knew I was interested in the education area.
How long is the application process? There are three steps. The first step was just sending in paperwork like my letters of recommendation, the form itself, my transcript, and my SAT scores. Then I had to go for an interview with Dr. Maddas so she could get to know me, and finally I had to wait to find out if I had been accepted.
Who inspired you to pursue education?Mrs. Chury. She was the best teacher I ever had and I hope to be just like her.
Emily then decided to share her story.
“When I had first applied, my SAT score wasn’t good enough, so they said I either had to take the loss on the scholarship or take the SAT again to improve my score. They said I needed to submit it by December 7th, but the only time I could take it again was December 6th, and they can’t check the SAT’s in one day that’s just not a thing. So Mrs. Baker did some emailing and really helped me out. I decided to take it again and they moved me onto the next stage without my SAT score. They scheduled my interview for December 11th and I had to write an essay while I was there in one hours time (which was AWFUL!) and they said they would let me know either way by March 1st. I waited nervously for three months… March 1st came and went. Then I was sitting in lunch March 2nd and I refreshed my email because I was anticipating an email from Dr. Maddas and I received one at 11:12 and I went into Mr. Gulich’s room because I had to be by myself, clicked on the link, and I saw I had got it. Following that were a lot of tears, nervousness, and near death (my heart rate went up to 194) and then I went on a telling spree.”
Emily would like to give a special thanks to:
Her parents & sister Sarah
Mrs. Baker for being an angel
All of the other teachers from Ben Franklin (especially Mrs. Chury
And last but not least, all of the UHS staff
We would like to congratulate Emily and wish her the best of luck!
