In order to build capacity for future students’ use of the media center, we have developed a “media mentorship” between the high school media interns and students at the middle school level. The interns assisted last year with the training, planning, and creation of video for a competition called, “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing.” Cameras and equipment from the media center were used to capture video and the middle school students came to the high school to use the Adobe studio to edit.
This program, sponsored by Catalyst Connections, brings awareness to the many STEM-related jobs available in our region by partnering students with local manufacturers. Together they create a video that promotes the “cool” factor of this type of work. Last year our partner was Sensus/Xylem Technologies (formerly Rockwell). The students were quite successful in their work as they won the regional competition and moved onto the states. The students were able to take the trip to Harrisburg for this wonderful event, were given a capitol tour and were recognized on the House floor for their achievements.
The program will continue this year with our partner EbTech in Connellsville.
