Poetry Contest Runner Up: Distance

It’s been a year since they’ve seen each other’s faces
He’s been away for quite some time and she’s growing impatient
They promised that they’d find a way to make this work
But if only she knew that he wasn’t coming back

She wakes up every morning, with the thought of getting through
Another day without him there, and she wonders why
The phone calls were disconnected, and texts lost in translation
She’s starting to give up on him too

They’ve been best friends since high school
But they had different plans
She wanted to go to college, and he wanted the fame
She opens up her text book, as he opens a show
Two different lives, another day
And they slowly change

He wakes up in his tour bus
That the record label paid
His cell phone rings, but he ignores it
While she’s on the other end
“Please call me back when you get this, you know that I will always love you.”

She starts to get the feeling, the something isn’t right
A couple of days later, she finds out the truth
He’s gone and found another
She can’t believe its true
She throws away the pictures
But the memories remain

They’ve been best friends since high school
But they had different plans
She wanted to go to college, and he wanted the fame
She opens up her text book, as he opens a show
Two different lives, another day
And they slowly change

A couple of months later
He shows up at her doorstep
But little does he know
She’s moved away
He sits on the front porch step
Where they first kissed
He realizes the mistake he made
But it’s too late
