Setting up to Swim

Swim meets can be hectic at times to say the least.  Before the meet starts, the coaches and swimmers work together to set up the area.  The timing systems need to be connected and set up in the water, and the good lane lines need to be put in the pool and tightened.  Once the actual pool is set up,  we need to clean the deck which means moving the life guard chair, the boats, and the benches around so the other team has a place to sit.

After the pool and pool deck are set up, the swimmers can go see what events they’re swimming. The Swimmers don’t know what they might be swimming until an hour or so before the beginning of the meet.  After we know what we’re swimming , we start warming up, which consists of some slow distance, a lap or so of every different stroke, kicking, practicing flip turns, and starts off the block.  And since we now know what we’re going to swim, we have an idea of what exactly we need to be working on.   When the home team is done with their warm-up, the visiting team will get in the pool and start their warm-up.  Both teams’ divers will be warming up on the diving board while the other warm-ups are going on.

Swim meets always start with the Star Spangled Banner, which is the time that all the swimmers line up on the edge of the pool and face the flag.  Then the divers do six dives each, in a rotating manner.  After the dives, we have to finish setting up the pool because some things have to wait until the diving is over, such as putting up the diving board, put in the last lane-line and put the flags in the water.  The flags are for more than decoration, they’re also to help the backstroke swimmers know how close they are to the wall.  Then we go right into the girls 200 Medley Relay.  Each event has a heat for the girls, followed by a heat for the boys.
