UHS Alumni Victim in Synagogue Shooting

Richard Gottfried, a UHS alumni, has passed away recently due to gun violence. On October 27th, 2018, Gottfried was at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill when he was killed by a gunman.

Gottfried graduated in 1970 with former UHS staff, Joe Everhart and John Fortugna. Mr. Everhart said that he was extremely sad and heart broken to learn the news.  Gottfried was involved in several extra curricular activities during his time at UHS.  He was a member of the golf team, concert band, marching band, one act, maroon and white literary staff, and science club.  His mother, Miriam, was a former business teacher at Uniontown High School.

After high school, Gottfried went to college at the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English literature and dental medicine.  Gottfried ran a dental office with his wife and practice partner Margaret “Peg” Durachko Gottfried. He and his wife met at the University of Pittsburgh as dental students, according to the Washington Post, and opened their practice together in 1984. Gottfried, who often did charity work seeing patients who could not otherwise afford dental care, was preparing to retire in the next few months. Gottfried was known for helping others in need, as he worked part time at a non-profit organization at Squirrel Hill Health Center.

Uniontown High School is sending our condolences to the family and friends of Richard Gottfried.
