The Red Raider baseball and softball teams both earned wins earlier this week. Baseball defeated West Mifflin 9-8 on Uniontown’s senior night. The team honored five seniors: Mark Fike, Christian Forsythe, Eric Idrovo, Colby Simmons, and Carter Waligura. The game was back-and-forth the whole way, and it took 9 innings instaed of the regular seven to decide a winner. The Raiders took a 4-0 lead early, but West Mifflin battled to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh. Uniontown answered with one in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras. In the ninth, West Mifflin scored three to go up 8-5. The Raiders continued to fight and scored four in the bottom of the ninth, with the winning run coming on a walk-off single by Kaine Frye.
Uniontown’s softball also earned a win the same night as the baseball team’s. While baseball’s game was close throughout, softball’s was not. The Red Raiders beat the Frazier Commodores in convincing fashion at Bailey Park. This was an out of section game, but the Raiders beat their local rivals who were at the top of their section. This was softball’s first win but it will likely serve as motivation in their upcoming games. Softball takes the field again this Friday, April 29th, against Greensburg-Salem. Uniontown is currently towards the bottom of their section standings, but wins in their last few games could push them right back towards the top.
The Raider baseball team resumes play with three consecutive games starting Thursday, April 28th. This game is the completion of a suspended home game against Elizabeth Forward, with the Raiders leading 1-0 in the second inning. Uniontown takes on South Park Friday in their final home game of the season, which is looking to be a battle for third place in the section. They will play Ringgold on the road on Saturday. The team is currently 5-4 in their section and in third place. At the end of the season, the top three teams in the section make the WPIAL Class-AAA playoffs. Uniontown will be looking to make their first playoff appearance in two years. Come out and support both the baseball and softball teams!
