The students of Uniontown Area High School either live in town or the surrounding areas. The city of Uniontown was founded on the fourth of July, 1776 by Henry Beeson. The National Road was routed through Uniontown in the early 19th century. Uniontown was a vital stop for escaped slaves before and during the Civil War, it is commemorated by a sign marker not far from the high school. During the late 19th century Uniontown grew from the development of coal mines but was hampered slightly when 15 coal mine guards with machine guns opened fire on 1,500 striking miners right here in town in the strike of 1894. The steel industry also helped Uniontown grow when the Columbia Rolling Mills was in town from 1887-1895. The many mansions in Uniontown can be attributed to the 13 millionaire coal barons which resided here during the early 20th century. Later in the second world war, a Tacoma class frigate was named for Uniontown. In 1967 the Big Mac was invented in Uniontown as well.
