Elon Musk Buys Twitter

On Monday, April 25th Elon Musk purchased the social media platform Twitter from its previous owner Jack Dorsey for 44 billion dollars. This offer was followed by much skepticism from investors from the company, mainly due to the fact that it was such a large offer and Twitter was hardly the most successful platform compared to competitor platforms. Twitter has 338 million monthly users and compared to TikTok, which has 600 million monthly users, and Facebook which has 2 billion monthly users, it is relatively small.

Because of its smaller numbers, many people are confused to why Musk decided to buy the platform for such a large sum. Elon Musk, who described himself as a “free-speech absolutist,” has said that he bought Twitter in order to reduce censorship and make the site a free-speech platform because, “free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy.” He stated that he bought Twitter out of concern that the company has pushed overly aggressive moderation rules on a platform that had developed as a crucial part of politics and government.

Due to his vocalization about the upcoming role changes to twitter, many people are wondering if people banned in the past for breaking moderation rules will be reinstated once the rule change is made. More specifically, people are wondering if former president Donald Trump will be reinstated to the website. Trump was banned from twitter during the January 6th capitol riot, and has since created his own platform ,”Truth Social.” Trump has reportedly said ,” I am not going on Twitter, I’m going to stay on Truth.” Elon Musk has not yet said if he would reinstate past banned users or Trump in the future.
