The Red Raider baseball team opened their season against Belle Vernon this year. The games were scheduled to be played Monday March 28th and Tuesday March 29th, however due to some weather issues the games were played Wednesday March 30th and Saturday April 2nd. Last year when the Raiders played Belle Vernon they lost both games, one game 11-1 and the other 4-2. The team was more prepared than ever this year, putting in a lot more work and having extra help from new coaches Jim Burns and Joe Lapresta.
The first game of the series the team came out with tons of energy. It was still a very tight game though. The game was a pitchers duel having a total of 3 runs scored by both teams the whole game. Junior Christian Thomas was on the mound for the raiders throwing 6 innings allowing only one run. For the Leopards senior Matt Bamford went 6 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs. The Raiders were able to pull through though and beat the Leopards 2-1.
The second game the Raiders weren’t as electric. They were down early with the score being 6-0 in the third inning. This didn’t mean it was over for the Raiders though. The Raiders started to chip away in the 3rd finally putting a run on the board. Then in the 4th inning the Raiders rallied scoring 4 runs to make it a one run game. The Raiders had tons of momentum but a run scored by the Leopards in the 5th made the score 7-5. The Raiders still weren’t ready to give up though. Then in the 5th inning the Raiders scored 2 runs to tie the game 7-7. Great defense was played by both sides and this took the game to extra innings. Then in the bottom of the 8th a groundball hit by Tate Musko scored Christian Thomas to walk it off and give the Raiders the win. With this walk-off the Raiders swept the Leopards to start their season 2-0.
