Plot: Found footage helps a true-crime author realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.
Review: With Halloween just around the corner, moviegoers are expecting some really good scares. This year, there are quite a few horror films for people to check out. Such as “Paranormal Activity 4”, “Silent Hill Revelation: 3D”, and “Sinister”. I never really cared for the “Paranormal Activity” films or “Silent Hill”, so my only choice at a horror film to view in the theater was “Sinister”. That was fine with me, because after seeing the trailer for it, I was hooked and knew that I had to see it. From the opening shot alone, you can tell what you’re in for. When Ellison (the author) and his family move into their new home, they think everything will be okay and that he will finally write his next big hit. But Ellison discovers a box of old super 8 films in the attic, and from then on, things get uncomfortably dark, and…well…sinister. It turns out that the films Ellison discovers are all murder tapes of families, one family lived in the house in which he and his family are living in now. Although the murders were scattered across the map, each video shares a common supernatural entity. Ellison discovers that the figure in every video is named Bughuul (meaning the “eater of children”), and it is believed that the mysterious figure lived in the images/videos themselves and that they were gateways into his realm. Children who are exposed to the images were extremely vulnerable to Bughuul’s abduction of them. Now, I don’t want to go into too much detail because that would give away a lot of the movie. With that being said, I cannot even begin to explain how terrifying this movie is. I literally had chills while watching this in the theater. The imagery is really creepy, the music is haunting, and the murder tapes are violently disturbing. Finally, I have witnessed a scary movie that truly frightened me. That is what I expect when I watch a horror film, but nowadays it is hard to come by. Sinister is a major exception, I highly recommend this one if you are a true horror fan that wants to be shocked. I am going to use the word that I rarely use when describing movies, but Sinister truly is perfect. My fair warning to anyone going to see this film, is to not watch it if you are faint of heart. If this film does not scare you, then I don’t know what will.
