The Christmas Season is upon us and there are so many wonderful local activities going on right now. The one we are going to focus on in this article is the Nutcracker Ballet. This showcase is held at the State Theatre in Story Square, Uniontown debuting the local dancers from around the city.
The Nutcracker is a magical story written by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a Russian composer. This was one of the last three ballets he was able to write in his life time. As a general description, the Nutcrack is about a young girl named Clara who lived in a beautiful house with her mother, Father, little brother, and her nanny. They held a house party for all their friends and family to come visit. Uncle Drosslemyer, a very witty and somewhat magical character, brings presents for each of the children, one of them being a beautiful nutcracker doll for his niece Clara. Clara’s little brother becomes jealous and steals the doll. They begin fighting over the toy and the nutcracker’s arm becomes broken. Clara so kindly wraps it up in bandages and falls fast asleep on the couch with the doll.
Now begins the very whimsical part of the story. Clara dreams that a rat king breaks into her house and the Nutcracker comes to life to fight for her. Clara then defeats the rat king and her and the nutcracker take off into the magical snow filled land where they meet the snow king and snow queen. The snow queen sends the two off into the land of sweets next where they meet the Dew Drop Fairy and the Sugar Plum Fairy. All the villagers, so cleverly named after different candies, perform dance numbers for Clara and bring her many gifts. To finish out the show, the Sugar Plum Fairy performs a solo number for Clara and thanks her for visiting the land. She waves goodbye and Clara begins to wake from her dream with her nutcracker in his sling sitting beside her in their warm decorated house. So ends the story.
At the State Theatre each and every dancer is cast for a special roll to bring this Christmas filled story to life. They will be presenting the show December 17th and 18th at 7:00 p.m. and December 18th and 19th at 2:00 p.m. It is such a wonderful part of the holidays that can become one of your family Christmas traditions.
