With the season still being limited due to COVID-19, the Uniontown Football team still managed to pull off its best season in years. The football team had a 2-4 record which broke Uniontown’s 35 game loosing record and ended the season with a hard fought game against its cross town rivals the Laurel Highlands Mustangs eventually loosing 14-42. This was Keith Jeffries first year as a head coach for the football team after being with the program for years.
The football team had a party of players in the backfield this season with Juniors Braxton Swaney and Maurice Jackson leading the way at full back. At running back we had Sophomore Cam Jackson and Junior Devin George who both had multiple touchdowns on the season with Freshman Notorious Grooms also getting his share of carries. At Quarterback there were first year Senior Evan Townsend who threw for multiple touchdowns on the season. First year Senior Devin Miles was used as a utility player this year getting reps at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and return man. The other receivers on the team included Seniors Jesse Jeffries and Lee Troup and Junior Tyler Hawk . On the offensive line there was seniors Christian Perkins, Tannor Hawk, and Zack Clark, Junior Gabe Ranker, Sophomore Kyle Ray, and Freshman Gary Smitley with tight end Dom Grippe in to help block.
This years defense was the best its had in a while. Staring on the defensive line were seniors Christian Perkins, Gavin O’brien, and Tannor Hawk with Freshman Gary Smitley. At linebacker there were Juniors Braxton Swaney, Devin George, Dom Grippe, and Maurice Jackson. Finally at defensive backs we had Sophomore Cam Jackson, Junior Tyler Hawk, and Senior Devin Miles. This defensive held up offensive linemen and clogged up rushing lanes while getting multiple turnovers both fumbles and interception. Overall it was a really good season and you saw the Raiders put up a fight in games which we haven’t seen in some time and hopefully the trend continues with more students joining the team in the following years and getting more wins.
