Walking into the 2020 golf season the UHS golf team had one goal in mind: to win the golf sections. We felt we had an advantage considering we had a team of experienced golfers, and we were new to our section. The past two years the golf team was competing in AA. Competing in AA gave our team the opportunity to also win a section title, but we fell short both times.
Because of our past experiences, we were confident that we could pull off the section title this season, but we knew we had to pull out a win from the former section champions, Belle Vernon to be in contention. We did not want to repeat what we did the last two years. The season was going as planned and we were starting to believe that we could win the section. The day came to compete against Belle Vernon away at the Cedarbrook Golf Course, gold front nine. Coach Scott kept reminding us how good we are, and that the time was now to win. The whole team remained positive and that was key for us to go out and play our best game. Many of the golfers on the team had never played the gold course before, so it was critical to help each other out and navigate through the course throughout the golf match.
As the match went on, our team was feeling confident in how they were playing. The raiders finished strong and the results were looking promising. The first group came in with Adena Rugola carding a 36 and Logan Voytish finishing with a 43. In the second group Maddie Myers carded a 39 and Michael Mercadante finished with a 41. With these results, one our teammates, Gage Brugger or Nate Moody, needed to shot a 40 or lower for the team to shoot under 200. We were on pins and needles to see what the last group finished with. Gage Brugger came through and carded a 40.
With these results, Uniontown had a team total of a 199. You could feel the excitement from everyone. We waited anxiously to see what Belle Vernon’s team total was. When coach Scott announced the final score of a 199-209, Uniontown was jumping with joy! With this victory, it gave the team the momentum to finish the season undefeated.
Looking back at the 2020 golf season, there is a lot to be proud of. Our three seniors, Maddie Myers, Michael Mercadante, and Nate Moody accomplished what they had their heart set on ever since walking into their first high school golf practice, freshman year. Our juniors Adena Rugola, and Gage Brugger stepped up to the plate and helped carry the team. Logan Voytish and Wade Brugger have a bright future ahead of them given that they are freshman. We could not be prouder of our Red Raider golf team. They took it upon them selves to put the extra hours in to work hard during the off season to get better. This team is the epitome of the phrase “anything is possible with hard work and dedication.” We may be small, but we sure are mighty!
