Uniontown and Blackhawk met in the Quarterfinal round in the WPIAL 4A boys basketball playoffs. Uniontown entered the game with a regular season record of 20-2 while Blackhawk entered with a 13-10 regular season record. Uniontown got the number 4 seed with their incredible regular season performance and Blackhawk was the number 5 seed, with a first round win against Elizabeth Forward. The Cougars advanced to the next round where they would meet the Red Raiders in the quarterfinal round.
Coming down to the final minutes of the game, Uniontown led Blackhawk 51-44 with 4:03 left in regulation, but the Cougars wouldn’t go away. Uniontown held a 54-50 advantage, but Heckathorn scored with 19 seconds left to cut the deficit to two points. Uniontown’s Ray Robinson then went 1 of 2 from the free throw line with 15 seconds left to increase his team’s lead by 3. With 9 seconds left in regulation Blackhawk’s Ryan Heckathorn hit a high-arcing shot to send the game to overtime. In overtime it was all Blackhawk, The cougars scored the first 8 points and outscored Uniontown 14-8.
Blackhawk’s Ryan Heckathorn scored 6 of his game high 20 points in overtime; four other players from Blackhawk scored in double figures: Marco Borello (14), James Darno (12), Ryan McClymonds (11), and Tyler Fedisin (10). Billy DeShields led Uniontown with 15 points, while Bryant Grady added 13 and Jahmere Richardson and Ray Robinson scored 12 a piece. Blackhawk advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2011. The Cougars will take on No. 1 Highlands on Wednesday 2/26, while Uniontown needs the Cougars to reach the final in order to qualify for the PIAA playoffs.
