What We Know About The Omicron Variant So Far

The omicron variant was first detected December 20, 2021. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states, “We don’t know how easily it spreads, the severity of illness it causes, or how well available vaccines and medications work against it.” However, they were able to later say that the omicron variant will likely spread more easily than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The CDC also stated that vaccines have remained effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and death, and they help to protect you against the omicron variant. While CDC scientists are still doing many tests on the variant to learn more. The variants delta and the omicron, have shown similar symptoms including cough, fever, and fatigue. One epidemiologist and professor, Lorena Garcia stated, “The viral is much higher in Omicron, which means that someone infected with the Omicron variant is more infectious than someone infected with the Delta variant.”
